VJ Day Anniversary Aug 14, Sean and family visits

Celebrating the end of WWII in Pacific

Victory celebration in Brisbane (note the tram blocked by crowds as Mom reported)

Crowd dancing the hokey pokey as reported in Mom's letter!
These are three pictures taken in Brisbane celebrating the end of WW2 in the Pacific.  I will include some quotes from my Mom's letter to Dad on that long awaited day.  "So many people standing around asking one another the question, Is it true - will we really have peace after six long years?  Somehow it was impossible to grasp at first.  Soon we heard shouts, cheers and singing and it went on until the dawn. At Anzac Square we had to leave our crowded tram because traffic was held up by the hundreds who blocked the streets singing and dancing.  We passed crowds dancing the Hokey-pokey in the streets.  We reached the front of town hall which was crowded with at least 15,000 people, the orchestra was playing.

There was to be dancing but somehow there wasn't room to dance so the crowds sang all their song favourites.  What a choir!   15,000 voices!  You could hear them for blocks.  They cheered the King, the President and just about everyone you you could think of. Now this is Sunday, we went to a Thanksgiving service at St Andrews.  Yes, we have cause to thank God and we can never repay the debt we owe to those boys who gave up their lives that we might live at peace.  There are many sad hearts yearning for those who will never come back.  Pray that we will never forget their great sacrifice, or the noble heritage that is passed on to us and our children."
